Joe Diffie was an American country music singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was best known for his singles “Home”, “If the Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets)”, “Third Rock from the Sun”, “Pickup Man” (his longest-lasting number-one song, at four weeks) and “Bigger Than the Beatles”. Diffie also co-wrote singles for Tim McGraw, Holly Dunn, and Jo Dee Messina, and recorded with Mary Chapin Carpenter, Marty Stuart, and George Jones. Born Joe Logan Diffie on December 28, 1958 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, into a musical family, his parents are Flora and Joe Riley Diffie. He first performed in his Aunt Dawn Anita’s country music band at age 14. He graduated from Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. On March 27, 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, Diffie was diagnosed with COVID-19. He died two days later of the infection at a Nashville, Tennessee hospital at the age of 61. He was cremated at Neptune Society in Brentwood, Tennessee, and his ashes were given to his widow.
